How much space does a reformer studio need?
Updated 6 October 2026
Plan for about 7.0 m² (75 sq ft) of floor per reformer. That covers the machine plus the space around it for arm work, the head end and the walkway for the instructor. US industry guides cite 3.7 to 4.6 m² (40 to 50 sq ft) per reformer, and the planner uses 4.5 m² (48 sq ft) as its minimum, but the layouts in the planner need 5.2 m² (56 sq ft) to 5.7 m² (61 sq ft) per reformer even at minimum spacing.

What size room do you need for 4 to 12 reformers?
The table shows the smallest rectangular room that fits each number of reformers. We found it by running auto-arrange from the planner on every room from 3.00 m to 16.00 m in 10 cm steps, with two rows of reformers facing a shared aisle. The machine is the standard reformer in the planner, 2.45 m × 70 cm, a typical studio reformer.

With recommended spacing the rooms work out at 7.1 m² (77 sq ft) to 7.5 m² (81 sq ft) per reformer, close to the 7.0 m² rule of thumb. These are empty rectangles. Add space for the reception, storage, changing rooms and doors, and for any column or radiator in the way.
Computed with the rules of the planner (auto-arrange and the spacing table), not measured in real studios.
What ceiling height does a reformer studio need?
At least 2.40 m (7′ 10″) if clients stand on the reformer, and 2.50 m (8′ 2″) is better. The standing figure is the higher one, so it decides the ceiling whenever clients stand on the carriage, whatever machine you use.

Does a Megaformer need more space?
Yes. A Lagree Megaformer M3 measures 3.30 m × 89 cm, against 2.45 m × 70 cm for a typical studio reformer, and Lagree gives 9.3 m² (100 sq ft) of floor per machine. The Megaformer is built for the Lagree method and is not a Pilates reformer, so plan a Megaformer room on its own numbers.
